After Gabrielle tries unsuccessfully to save the Amazon princess Terreis, she learns that she is responsible for avenging Terreis' death. Phantes, the centaur accused of the murder, is actually innocent but Xena must find the true murderer quickly if she hopes to save Phantes, avert war between the Amazons and their enemy the Centaurs, and keep Gabrielle from being killed in combat against Melosa, the Amazon Queen. Gabrielle claims royal Amazon blood by virtue of Right of Caste and demands the Royal Challenge, whereby Xena, as her champion, will fight Melosa to try to stop Phantes' execution. Melosa is finally overpowered and Xena is proclaimed the new Queen of the Amazons just as Tyldus and his centaurs arrive. When Xena reveals that the warlord Krykus was responsible for Terreis' murder, both sides agree to attack his camp together. An uneasy peace is formed between Centaurs and Amazons.
